I am often asked — why did I take engineering if I always wanted to be an entrepreneur? This article is the first in a series to enlighten all such troubled souls.

There is a lot to take away from science. The correlations are surreal, beautiful, and scarily baffling at times. In our troubled and messy early twenties, when we struggle to find our footing — teetering along, stumbling, saving ourselves from another fall — we look to hold on to something that can stabilize shaky knees and radio ankle coordinates to the brain. I was in a mess too, and I held on to the only thing I knew: science.

I have happily borrowed from science and maths in my pursuit of stability. Here, I am sharing some of those borrowings. Feel free to disconnect.

Entropy

Entropy is the measure of randomness, of uncertainty, in a thermodynamic system. Once created, the entropy of an isolated system can only increase. It is essentially how the arrow of time affects our lives — and more so, an entrepreneur’s life.

With increase in age (of anything — a venture, ourselves), our exposure increases and so do the distractions. The temptation to try every trick of the trade is very high for an entrepreneur. We try to expose ourselves to every article (this one included), every piece of advice, every reference possible, in a bid to learn a bit more — falsely believing that all exposure is good. It is good, but we don’t yet know which exposures are distractions and which are genuine interests.

One has to teach oneself how to separate signal from noise.

Reducing Entropy

To reduce entropy, one has two options:

  1. External — Don’t be isolated. Include others in your thermodynamic system. This is why it is essential to network with similar people.

  2. Internal — Devise ways to structure your thoughts. This is why listing and prioritizing is such a popular tool. It is the polar opposite of randomness — you are effectively reducing your entropy. Same with mind maps.

I use both methods, as and when needed.

2026 Reflection

The entropy framing has aged better than I expected — not because it was particularly original, but because the underlying dynamic it describes has only intensified. In 2013, the noise was blog posts and conferences and too many introductions. In 2026, the noise is AI-generated content, ambient notifications, an infinite stream of product launches, and agents that can now produce more inputs to your decision-making process than any human could ever process.

The entropy of a founder’s information environment has not decreased. It has increased by orders of magnitude. The second law holds.

What has changed is the nature of the two reduction strategies. The external strategy — not being isolated, building a network of signal-dense relationships — now competes with an enormous artificial surface area of pseudo-connection. LinkedIn is not a thermodynamic system with other humans. It is mostly noise with a human-shaped interface. The quality of the external entropy-reduction method depends entirely on whether the people in your system are genuinely reducing your uncertainty or just adding more inputs.

The internal strategy has gotten more tractable, ironically because of AI. At Zopdev, we design infrastructure systems where autonomous agents need to operate with low entropy — clear goals, bounded decision surfaces, structured feedback loops. An agent with high entropy in its objective function makes bad decisions. An agent with low entropy — clear priorities, well-defined constraints, reliable signal about what is working — performs dramatically better. This is not a metaphor. It is literally the architecture challenge of agentic systems.

The discipline required to reduce your own entropy as a founder is the same discipline required to design an agent that actually ships reliable infrastructure decisions. Define the objective function precisely. Minimize the inputs that don’t reduce uncertainty. Build feedback loops that are fast enough to update the model before the environment changes again. The thermodynamics are the same whether the system is a person or a machine.

The signal-versus-noise problem is not solved. It has become the central design challenge of this era of computing.
